Mouth Ulcers and Folate, B12, Iron Associations
Mouth ulcers (canker sores) are often idiopathic, stress-related, trauma from braces/biting, or tied to products like SLS toothpaste. In nutritional deficiency education, iron, folate, and vitamin B12 shortfalls are sometimes associated with recurrent oral ulcers. That association is a reason to learn and, if ulcers keep returning, to ask a clinician, not to megadose vitamins from a blog.
Non-dietary causes to take seriously
Behçet’s and other systemic diseases, viral infections, inflammatory bowel disease, and medication effects. One stubborn ulcer lasting weeks deserves a look.
Associated nutrients
| Nutrient | Note | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Folate (B9) | Discussed with oral and blood-cell health | /nutrients/folate/ |
| Vitamin B12 | Deficiency education can include oral and neuro symptoms | /nutrients/vitamin-b12/ |
| Iron | Low iron status appears in some ulcer/recurrent apthae discussions | /nutrients/iron/ |
ODS: Folate, B12, Iron. Riboflavin (B2) also appears in some oral-mucosa teaching, ask a clinician before supplementing.
Food patterns
Very restricted diets, little animal/fortified B12 sources if vegan, low leafy greens/legumes (folate), low iron foods.
How CalBuddy helps
Log meals; spot chronic gap patterns; keep a buddy so logging doesn’t die when you’re uncomfortable eating. Still get mouth sores checked if they recur.
